When a McCarthy and Stone village began a development nearby, it caught the eye of Jennifer Perrin 74 and her husband Michael Perrin, aged 86, who wondered what life would be like in a retirement community and how it could meet their changing needs.

Getting the extra help

‘For over 40 years we lived in the same house and raised our 4 children there. But with my husband’s health deteriorating and the stairs becoming more of a challenge for us both, our home was becoming impractical for just the two of us’, explains Jennifer.

Empty nest

The couple from Atherstone North Warwickshire, both retired NHS workers, first met at work where Jennifer was a nurse and Michael was an ambulance officer. After getting married, they bought their first home; a 3-bed detached that boasted 2 gardens and was close to amenities that their growing family needed.

Now their children have flown the nest, the once busy family home was feeling empty, oversized and too much to maintain.

‘We were rattling around our big house and instead we needed something smaller and more practical. I’d driven past the McCarthy and Stone development many times, and it had planted a seed in my mind that this would suit us better in retirement. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time as shortly after we first visited, a ground floor garden apartment came up for sale and we decided to go for it’, said Jennifer.

Wanting to avoid the stress

Having bought their first property over 40 years ago, the couple had never sold a property. Despite trying to sell their house unsuccessfully a few years earlier through an estate agent, it made the thought of selling later in life a daunting prospect.

‘McCarthy and Stone offered us a way to sell our home via their part-exchange partner Spring. This was ideal for us as it meant we didn’t have to put our house on the market or have strangers traipsing through the house on viewings. Spring took away a lot of the worries and stresses we were feeling and made the move so much easier, plus it allowed us to move when it suited us and we didn’t have to wait’, explained Jennifer.

A new chapter

Now with a large airy lounge featuring French doors onto the garden, and a fully fitted kitchen to enjoy their love of cooking, the couple are enjoying their new retirement lifestyle. They  have no maintenance to do, onsite wardens, and a convenient location that enables them to still see their family, old neighbours and pop to the local shops.

‘Choosing Spring’s part-exchange service allowed us to sell up quickly and easily. Once we had made the decision to move, we just wanted to get on with it. The Spring team were always at the end of the phone and I was reassured by their open, friendly communication. I also got my cheque from the Spring Price Promise which was perfect for us once we moved in. Overall, I’d highly recommend Spring to my friends and family’.

All the Spring team wish Jennifer and Michael all the very best in their new home and we are delighted to have been part of their journey. Get in touch today, to find out how Spring can get you started on the next chapter in your life sooner than you think.
